Pressure balanced expansion joint is used most frequently in applications similar to those shown for the single expansion joint, but where pressure loading up on piping or equipment is considered excessive or objectionable. The major advantage of the pressure balanced design is its ability to absorb externally imposed axial movement without imposing pressure loading on the system.Where large amounts of lateral deflection are involved, a pressure balanced universal expansion joint must be used. Two bellows are used in the flow end of the expansion joint and a single bellows in the balancing end. Molded type expansion joints incorporate the movement and vibration dampening capability of a spool joint into a compact and robust device.Molded type expansion joints are available in several sizes and variations. The distinguishing features of the spherical joints are the shape of the body, floating flanges and the beaded seal. The more common configurations include the single sphere, double sphere and double sphere union. The double sphere is for applications requiring greater movement than a single sphere, while double sphere unions are installed in smaller-sized threaded pipe applications.

Expansion bellows can be designed with reinforcing or equalizing rings which are located around the outside of the convolutions, preventing bellows being forced out from high pressure. The principal purpose of these devices is to reinforce the bellows under internal high pressure, so that bellows does not squirm and equalize movement among all the convolutions.Equalizing and reinforcing rings are made of carbon steel, stainless steel or other suitable alloys.Reinforcing rings are usually Tee shaped in cross section and equalizing rings are normally fabricated from tubing or solid round bars of suitable material.Bellows with reinforcing or equalizing rings can be made for any type of expansion joint (axial, lateral or angular etc.). The disadvantage of these bellows is the increased stiffness and limited movement of the bellows.

They are also widely used to protect equipment against vibration and piping loads.

A single expansion joint is designed to permit angular rotation in any plane by the use of two pairs of hinges affixed to a common floating gimbal ring.Unlike the hinged joint, which can absorb angular rotation in a single plane only, the gimbal joint can absorb angular rotation in any plane. The ability of the gimbal expansion joint to absorb angular rotation in any plane is most often applied by using two gimbal joints which act together to absorb movement. Gimbals, like hinges, are designed to transmit the pressure thrust and are used in pairs, or in conjunction with a hinged joint. A gimbal ring is either round or square. Double hinged expansion joint consists of two single hinged expansion joints connected with intermediate pipe with double hinge restraints to absorb pressure thrust, axial force due to the effect of pressure. Therefore, any expansion of the center pipe within the limits of the hinge bar will simply compress the bellows, and will not exert movement on the adjoining pipe. Double Hinged Type Expansion Joint

A single hinged expansion joint is designed to permit angular rotation in one plane, by the use of a pair of pins through hinge plates attached to the expansion joint ends.Hinged joints are used in sets of two or three, to absorb pipe movement in one or more directions in a single plane piping system.Expansion joint hinges are designed to transmit the full pressure thrust of the expansion joint. A hinged system permits large movements to be absorbed with minimal anchor forces.These units do not allow axial movement however, some types of hinge systems can be provided with holes for the hinge pin that are slotted to allow limited axial displacement. Large offset movements are possible in a universal assembly by increasing the distance between the two bellows.
